Aston Sunset Beach Resort, Gili Trawangan

In Gili Trawangan, we would recommend to stay at Aston Sunset Beach Resort as its design is more modern and its facilities are much better than Ombak Sunset Resort. 

Aston’s swimming pool is more attractive and more fun to relax. Apart of these, I can also say that Aston’s choices of food at its restaurant are much better and more choices than Ombak Sunset Resort. Price per night, Aston Sunset Beach Resort is slightly cheaper than Ombak Sunset Resort.

Ombak Sunset Resort and Spa, Gili Trawangan

In Gili Trawangan, we stayed at Ombak Sunset Resort & Spa for 2 nights. We chose because we were attracted with its swings placed on the beach with sunset background. We got great deals from Booking.com for 2 nights staying includes breakfast at Ombak Sunset Resort considering we only booked 1 night before we left to Gili Trawangan.

The hotel restaurant offers great food too. You can dine either at the hotel's beach cafe or at the hotel main restaurant. The food and drinks costs considerably cheap, ranging from 40,000 - 90,000 Rupiah and 2 cocktails for 98,000 Rupiah.

We prefer to dine at the hotel's beach cafe.

Hotel Restaurant

Ombak Sunset Resort and Spa offers great pizza selection whereby you can enjoy having pizza and cocktails while watching the sunset. The pizzas are amazing and the dough are freshly baked. Each pizza cost 75,000 - 90,000 Rupiah and the happy hour cocktails cost 98,000 Rupiah for 2 cocktails.

The Gili Trawangan has so much to offer. It is peaceful and has beautiful, crystal clear water but you cannot swim at most of the beaches around the small island as they are full of sharp rocks; it is even difficult to walk along the beach.

The only area which you can swim is along the jetty area. The water is blue and crystal clear and the beach is steep and deep. I love to swim at this beach but the beach is pretty busy with boats.

The rest beach areas of the island are rocky and the waves are far from the shore.

That makes the Ombak Sunset Resort popular as they have 3 swings placed on the beach. It is a perfect place to watch the sun goes down behind of Mount Agung, Bali. Most tourists will start queuing at the swings for photo shoots and I’d suggest you to come early to get the perfect sunset photo. The sunset starts at 6.00 pm.

Gili Trawangan, Lombok - Our First Honeymoon

After me and my wife had our wedding amazing sunset wedding reception at The Sanctus Villa by the Uluwatu cliff in Bali, we went to Gili Trawangan for our first honeymoon trip.

Gili islands are located between Bali and Lombok island and Gili consists of 3 small islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air.

To get to Gili Trawangan, there is only mode of transportation which is by speed boat. We bought speed boat tickets from Bali tour agent and it includes pick-up and return transport to our hotel in Seminyak by  van.

The speed boat journey takes 1 hour from Padang Bai, Bali to Lombok. The speed boat is comfortable with air-conditioned and passengers can also sit on sun deck roof of the speed boat.

The boat goes to Lombok jetty first then it goes to Gili Air to drop off passengers. The last destination is Gili Trawangan, hence total the speed boat journey with the 2 island stops takes almost 2 hours.

A horse cart for 100,000 Rupiah (one-way)

There are no motorized vehicles on Gili Trawangan. We stayed at Ombak Sunset Resort & Spa, which is far from the jetty; we hired a horse cart for 100,000 Rupiah (one-way). To move around, you can either rent a bicycle for 24 hours at 50,000 Rupiah (from bicycle rental shops) or 75,000 Rupiah (from Hotels).

When the weather is hot, you can always have Gili Gelato apart of iced cold Bintang beer. The Gili Gelato has plenty of gelato flavours and my favourite is Banan flavour.

At Gili Trawangan small town, most of restaurants serve western and local food. If you wanna have a local food, you can dine at an Indonesian restaurant with a great view. It is located next to Gili Dive Resort.

Next to the Indonesian restaurant, there is a massage place. Body and foot massage is pretty cheap at this shop and the view is amazing.

At the jetty area, is the only perfect place to swim and it is the only beach which is not covered with rocks.

Gili Trawangan is an island you must visit and experience. We might return to Gili but we would visit Gili Air and Gili Menon. The downside of Gili Trawangan are:

a) There's no motor vehicle which makes most tourists hard and difficult to travel from hotels to main town. I would not recommend to ride bicycle at night as the road is made of pebbles and very risky to ride on uneven pebbles and potholes at night.

b) The only beautiful and safe to swim beach is at the jetty area although it is deep. Unfortunately, the accommodations at the beautiful beach / jetty are Lodgings / BBs / Inns type which are suitable for single / young travelers and not suitable for honeymoon and family travelers.
